How I Saved For My House Deposit In Less Than a Year

It’s a Sunday morning, I’m still in my pyjamas and wrapped up in my duvet on the sofa in my office. I at least tried to make it to the desk, but didn’t quite succeed. I have a university deadline looming, yet I find myself painting my nails, writing a blog post and organising my body lotions in the bathroom – it’s always the way.

A study by online blinds retailer Direct Blinds has revealed that a third (33%) of people can’t afford to move out and pay rent. This is such a depressing stat – how are people meant to be able to afford to buy a property when they can’t even afford rent?!

In September 2014 I signed on the dotted line and agreed to buy a two bedroom new build property in my hometown, just 5 minutes from the beach. 12 months prior to that, I wouldn’t have even dreamed that I’d be half way to a deposit to buying a flat even close to where I wanted to be.

It’s been almost a year since I moved into my house (I bought it off plan!), and I thought it was about time to share some pictures of the upstairs of my house, as well as some tips on how I managed to save so quickly and got onto the property ladder. I’ve gone back to my old ways, but I like to try and keep to the majority of these regardless, as there is always something to save for!

So whether you’re looking to buy your first property start renting, then hopefully some of these will be helpful!:

  1. Make a shopping list before you go shopping, and stick to it
  2. Cancel your gym membership and get outside
  3. Stop buying ready meals
  4. Take pack lunches to work
  5. Cut down on drinking – you’ll feel sooo much better for it too.
  6. Buy frozen berries (instead of fresh) for smoothies
  7. Take up a hobby that doesn’t cost money (running, yoga etc)
  8. Sell your old junk on eBay
  9. Invite friends over instead of going out
  10. Stop buying breakfast or coffee in the morning at your local store
  11. Save your change
  12. Don’t shop when your hungry
  13. Listen to free music on Spotify and put up with the ads
  14. Walk to work (if you can!)
  15. Buy in bulk, if it’s worthwhile
