We’ve been living in our new home for a little over a year now and I can barely believe it. One of the rooms we sorted first was the master bedroom. It was a quick and easy room to finish because we had a clear plan and we wanted to keep it simple.
Just because we kept our bedroom simple, doesn’t mean it can’t be luxurious (in matter of fact, it’s quite the contrary, it feels like a little slice of heaven every time I go in there!). So, here are my top tips for creating a calming bedroom sanctuary.
Pick a colour scheme
Before you dive into buying accessories for your bedroom, start by pulling together a mood board of inspiration to help direct your design. Once you have a clear idea of what you’d like to achieve, you can start researching furniture and decorative items which will bring your vision to life. Throughout our home, we’ve gone for a natural, calming vibe so planning was crucial to ensure that we could translate this theme across every room so each level of the house flowed.
Consider lighting
Lighting is often one of those aspects of a room that is overlooked. Add a couple of bedside table lights or a lamp to bring a bit of mood lighting to the bedroom, without needing to turn on a harsh overhead light. We also invested in Phillip Hue LED bulbs in our most used rooms in the house and we haven’t looked back since. You can set timers, dim the lights and change the colour to something less intense, such as red.

Invest in luxury bedding
In most bedrooms, the bed is the focal point of the room. If that’s not enough of a reason to focus on having luxury bedding, just remember that you spend 1/3 of your life in bed, so it’s really worth spending a few extra pennies on some soft bedsheets. We have a 15 tog double goose feather super king duvet wrapped in white linen topped with a bedspread and throw cushions. Each Sunday we wash our bedding, following these helpful guidelines, and it makes every night an absolute dream.
Play with textures
Incorporating texture into a bedroom adds interest, depth, and appeal. Adding texture is the quickest way to make a room more interesting without overwhelming it with colours – perfect for keeping a cohesive, minimalist and calming design. The easiest way to add texture is by styling your bed with cushions, throws and bedspreads. You can also add texture when considering your rugs, furniture and curtains. Start thinking wool, linen, animal hides, wood, and hemp!

Dress your windows
Choosing the right window treatments can have a huge impact on the look of a bedroom. Whether you choose to go for blinds, curtains or shutters, it’s important to get the right fit and colour. Curtains should always be hung as high as possible and should either kiss the floor or create a puddle. This will add a luxurious feel to your bedroom, as well as lengthening the bedroom, offering the illustration of space. Consider layering blinds and curtains for privacy, too.
Lose the clutter
There’s nothing worse than going into a cluttered bedroom. Your bedroom should be a place of rest, anything else can be left outside. Remove any laundry, and tidy away anything that isn’t part of your winding-down routine. In our bedroom, you’ll find nothing more than our bedding, simple furniture, a plant and my essentials on the bedside table (hand cream, pillow spray, and whatever book I’m currently reading). This means the bedroom is always a calming place to be.
