Tips For Decluttering Before Moving To A New Home

Earlier this year, I bought and moved into a new home in Cornwall. As you will know if you have ever moved house, moving is a stressful process – there are just so many things to think about. From choosing a moving van to packing every last item up, moving comes with many tasks.

For me, however, one of the most daunting was decluttering before I moved out of my old home. I could have easily taken all the clutter that I got rid of with me. But the last thing I wanted was to have to pack it all up and waste resources, like boxes and tape. (Boxes for moving house are actually, pretty pricey.)

While decluttering can be daunting, it has to be done. To help make getting rid of your junk a little easier, I thought I would share a few tips with you.

Focus on one room at a time

Don’t make the mistake of trying to clear out various rooms at once. Start with one room, get rid of the junk, and then move on to the next one. You will find getting rid of your junk much easier if you work on one room at a time.

If you find yourself getting stressed, go away and do something else, and then come back to the clearing out, later on. You will be much more productive if you have had a chance to rest, instead of continually going through things.

Make it as easy for yourself as possible

The key to success when it comes to having a clear out is making the process as easy for yourself as possible. If you have to take everything that you want to get rid of to the dump, this will make clearing out your home more time-consuming.

Don’t use your local dump to get rid of your junk, hire a skip or contact a local rubbish removal company. Clearing out your stuff will be much less time consuming if you don’t have to take it to the dump. So hiring a specialist company to get rid of any junk for you, can be a fantastic idea, especially as it will help to save time.

Get some help

If time is tight, don’t be afraid to ask for some help. If you have any friends or family who live nearby, ask them to give you a hand with your pre-move clear out. Obviously, they won’t know what you do and don’t want, but there are still lots of simple things that they can do to help.

For instance, while you go through things and put them into two piles – keep and throw, they could pack the bits you want into boxes. With an extra pair of hands helping you out, you will find getting rid of the junk much easier.

Moving house is stressful, for me, the worst part was decluttering, as there was so much to go through. It might be tough having a big clear out, but in the long run, it’s worth the effort. You won’t have to pay to transport as much stuff, and your new home will be easier to keep tidy.
