Set goals (big and small!)

It doesn’t matter what walk of life you’re in, setting goals is important and the first step to handling life like a boss. Goals need to be attainable. They are not dreams or hopes. They are something you can measure and work towards.

Goals need to be set for a specific time frame. Start with something simple, like writing a certain number of words every day if you’re a blogger, or work on building your skillset for a certain amount of time every day. If you find that you struggle to meet the word count or time allotted for the goal you set, then you may need to make an adjustment to be successful.

Make sure whatever goal you set betters yourself and is doable. You don’t want to start out the gate feeling unsuccessful because you set yourself up for something you can’t actually achieve.

Write a business strategy

Getting a plan of action or strategizing to reach your goals is also important.

Amanda Botfeld has some amazing advice that you can apply to your day-to-day life when it comes to being a boss. In her book, A Girl’s Guide to Poker, she talks about the strategy she uses when playing poker. There’s more that can be taken away from her advice, she talks about the strategy involved and planning ahead. Additionally, Boss Up by Lindsay Teague Moreno talks about similar strategies in her book and gives you 10 lessons from women who are just like you, wanting to have it all and figuring out how to accomplish their goals.

Day to day life is similar, you have to plan your day with a strategy in mind. Learn how to adapt to reach the goal that you’ve set for the day, and keep going with your weekly, monthly, or yearly goals in mind. Having a strategy means that you’ll be setting yourself up to meet the goal that you’ve set, and you’re less likely to be caught off guard if something unplanned happens.

Celebrate your achievements

Sometimes it’s easy to fall into the trap of imposter syndrome. You’re constantly judging yourself and not allowing yourself to take credit for how far you’ve come and acknowledged your skillset. Staying stuck in the mindset of not being good enough means you aren’t taking the time to celebrate when you do reach a goal, or knock an idea or story out of the park.

Take a moment to recognize what you’ve accomplished. Take some time every day to notice where you’re succeeding and feel good about it. Part of being a boss is recognizing your successes and giving them the recognition they deserve.

Realize the importance of mentoring

When it comes to being a boss in everything you do, it takes focus and determination. Sometimes it takes talking to other people who are in the position where you want to be. It’s important to foster a relationship with people. Let them mentor you, learn from their mistakes and take away the parts that have helped them become the person they are. Watching and being mentored by others can help you develop more goals to work towards.

If you find yourself stuck on something, sometimes working with someone else or talking it out with your mentor can help you work through it or find a solution. As you continue on your journey to being a boss, take some time to mentor others. Don’t get so focused on yourself or your own goals that you forget to build strong relationships with other people. Even someone that you’re mentoring can be a wealth of knowledge. Building those relationships is how you grow as a person, professionally and personally.

While you may be struggling with how you want to approach each day, figuring out your goals and how you want to be a boss in your day-to-day life, this list should give you a good place to start. The first step is always the hardest, but it is the most important step taken. Take the time to get yourself ready to be successful and work towards that success every day. Don’t give up or quit even if you’ve had a rough day, and before you know it, you’ll be living every day like a boss.
