At what point do we question whether our elderly loved ones can still look after themselves independently? There are many possible signs that they cannot cope, but at what point do we intervene?
It is also important to remember to take time out for you. – Caring for a family member can take its toll and can lead to exhaustion. You may have a family of your own and a full-time job, plus this extra responsibility which of course you choose to do with no regret. But respite is essential for you to recharge, and there are many fabulous choices to choose from including Porthaven Residential Care. They offer your loved one a relaxing, comfortable environment while you are then able to stop… Be still… And chill when you need to.
There will be signs that things aren’t easy for them, and sometimes all it takes is some simple home modifications to make the home more accessible and safe. – We need to remember that keeping their dignity is of utmost importance.
Bathroom
Bumps and bruises are probably the first visual sign we would notice. – Most falls are encountered in the bathroom, so a simple hand rail for support, next to or opposite the toilet, (depending on the size of the room) would support those wobbly moments. This would give stability while sitting or standing and could be nicely disguised as a towel rail. Getting in and out of the bath isn’t always an easy task, so a walk in shower is ideal. A non slip floor would be essential along with a small seat inside.
Stairs
Most stairs have a handrail but if there isn’t one – put one in. Is the carpet worn or damaged? A loose fitted or threadbare carpet could cause a lot of damage. Make sure it doesn’t need replacing, fits firmly against the stairs, and doesn’t have any loose fibres as these could all lead to potential falls. A light motion detector at the bottom of the stairs to highlight the few bottom steps could potentially prevent a serious injury.
Kitchen
Pull out cupboards are a much easier option, so there isn’t a struggle bending over reaching for an item hidden at the back. Make sure the sink is at the correct height; too high or too low may cause instability and falls could occur, and the mat on the floor should have a rubber underside, so it won’t move and cause a trip. There are all types of equipment to make working in the kitchen easier. – Tin openers, scissors, knives, jar openers and even cutlery have been adapted so people who suffer from joint problems for example arthritis, can still complete daily tasks with less of a struggle.
General safety
Make sure all fire alarms and sensors are working efficiently and keep a carbon monoxide detector at all times, ensuring it is positioned in the correct location. Automated outside lighting is essential both front and back. Write down anything you need them to remember, for example, the time of the next visitor, or to put the milk away after making tea. Make sure your number can be dialled easily and remind them that they should phone you regarding any concerns they may have.
