How Food Can Improve Your Hike

When you go hiking, an important thing to keep in mind is what you eat- before and during. In my personal experience, it is very important to eat before you start a hike, no matter if it is a one-hour hike, a six-hour hike, or a full day trek.

S and I usually eat an hour or so before we go hiking. But it’s not only when you eat, but also what you eat that can have a significant impact on how you feel during the hike.

During one of the first trails I ever did, I remember having a salty breakfast beforehand. As a beginner hiker, I was not well informed, and did not think about it very much. I got SO thirsty during the hike- so quickly it was unbelievable.

I finished almost all of the water we had during the first half of the trail. For the second half of the hike, we had only half of a bottle of water left for both of us. Thank God, it wasn’t a long hike!

Before

Before you go hiking, eat something that you are comfortable with and that gives you lots of energy. I usually prefer to hike in the morning because the weather is nicer and cool, and the trails are less busy. A peanut butter banana sandwich made with whole grain bread works really well with me.

I also eat an apple because it gives quick boost of energy to start the trail.  Also, oatmeal (unsalted varieties) is another great food that I eat before a hike. It gives me lots of energy and keeps me from being hungry for long periods of time!

During

If you decide to go for a longer trail, moderate to hard, you can bring snacks with you (such as a granola bar or any dry food- something that does not smell, because smelly food can attract wildlife).

When you do eat during your hike, please make sure that you do not throw your food packaging on the trail. Put it in a zip-lock bag, and dispose of it in the first trash can you come across. If you throw it on the trail, it might attract unwanted wildlife, and it makes the trail less enjoyable for your fellow hikers.

Choosing the right food before you go hiking can have a dramatic impact on the quality of your hike. Choose high energy, low salt (and low fat) foods that will keep you going throughout the day – they are a must-have when going on a long hike.

If you do bring food, dry goods are preferable because they are less likely to attract wildlife. And as always, bring lots and lots of water!

If you eat right, you can dramatically improve your hiking experience![/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
